I have to share this amazing photo of student work! Below is a project my students, ages 8-11, from my Saturday Kids Class made at Red Star Studios. The theme for this class was architecture and I asked the students to throw 8 very, very small pieces of clay. They were invited to make to different shapes and sizes and stack them as they completed them. The result reminds me of Dr. Suess and I love how all the towers make a imaginative little city.
tile project-in progress
I have been working on a tile project inspired by Portuguese Azulejos. These pre-made tiles feature a Lisbon landscape including the Triumphal Arch. In Lisbon, I was intrigued by all of the buildings and how they were covered in patterned tile. This is my tribute to them. I will post more pictures when its complete. Remember the purple on these tiles is cobalt and will turn a bright blue after it’s fired!
and the glazing begins!
I’ve been busy making cups, mixing bowls, and jars. Not to mention, I bought these awesome pre-made bisque tiles from Crane Yard Clay. This will be a blue and white, cobalt landscape painting to add to our coffee table! The second picture is the backside of the La Sagrada Familia pot I posted earlier. I am really excited about the loose brushstrokes and adding stain to the majolica to use some new color in my work. Will be posting finished pictures soon!
flower pots for spring!
I just added new flower pots to my Etsy shop! Check ‘em out by viewing my SHOP. There are 6 small flowers pots about 5″ x 5″ x 5″ and as you can see below, they look great with cacti!! I have also used this size to start growing basil, thyme, parsley and other herbs! I also added one big flower pot that very special and decorative. Go to my etsy shop to see them all!!
screen printing…
Here is a picture I snapped today while playing around with a new technique, screen printing. This process is amazing! It is such a simple, fast way to get pattern down. One of the drawbacks is that you have to print on a flat surface. To accommodate this, I decided to make plates and decorate the backs. I think it works pretty well! I will post more pictures when the plates are complete!
La Sagrada Familia on my pot!
I am so excited about my Print on Clay class that I have been teaching at Red Star. Photo image transfer aka photo lithography on clay is amazing! Here is just one of my results that I have been playing around with. I love the quality of the printed image and it’s great because you can carve around the image adding more dimensionality to the piece! It is a very simple and rewarding process and will post more images as I continue to play!
